Seair Pacific - Lady Elliot Island ops

Established in 1985 and based at Gold Coast / Coolangatta Airport, Seair Pacific is an scenic air and charter operator providing a range of passenger transfers to tourist destinations such as Lady Elliot Island from a number of locations and contract Fly-in / Fly-out (FIFO) flights.

One of the more prominent FIFO operations by Seair Pacific is providing an almost daily Gold Coast / Brisbane / Sunshine Coast service to the small Central Queensland community of Theodore under contract by Australian gold company, Evolution Mining, to provide a reliable rotation for it's workforce at nearby Cracow Mine.

More about this operation can be viewed by clicking onto the link below :

Seair Pacific currently maintains a modest fleet of seven Cessna 208 Caravan's and three Pilatus Britten-Norman Islanders with the ability to configure the aircraft to carry freight when required.

Lady Elliot Island, located 80 kms north-east of Bundaberg is the southern most coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef, and is connected to the mainland by regular air and sea transfers.

For those electing to be transferred to Lady Elliot Island by air, Seair Pacific is the sole service provider with regular flights flying to the island from the Gold Coast, Redcliffe, Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. This review takes a look at the Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) and Bundaberg operation.

Based at Hervey Bay Airport at any given time, is at least one and on occasions two Cessna 208 Caravan's and the same number of Pilatus Britten-Norman BN2A Islanders with the aircraft providing regular (weather permitting) transfers to Lady Elliot Island from Hervey Bay and Bundaberg.

A typical flight will depart during the morning with the aircraft remaining parked on Lady Elliot Island for the better part of the day before returning late afternoon. During the day, the pilots time is that of thier own and free to enjoy what the island has to offer (snorkelling, etc) for as long as they are fit-for-duty when it comes time to fly the plane back to the mainland.

With exception to regular flights from the Fraser Coast to Lady Elliot Island, Seair Pacific also provides Fly-in / Fly-out (FIFO) operations from Maryborough near Hervey Bay to the small Central Queensland mining community of Middlemount. Flights between the two locations generally operate most Monday's and Thursday's.

Of interest, the Cessna 208 Caravan is a single PT6A-114 turboprop powered, fixed-gear, short-haul regional airliner / utility aircraft that has the capacity to seat upto 14 passengers although Seair Pacific have configured thier aircraft to accommodate 12 passengers, 13 if the front seat beside the pilot is utilised.

While not necessarily specific to the aircraft operated by Seair, research revealed the Cessna 208 Caravan is capable of cruising at 171 knots (317 km/h / 197 mph) and upto approximately 1996 km (1 240 miles) when maximum fuel and reserves are carried onboard.

Versatile by design, the Pilatus Britten-Norman Islander is an adaptable aircraft given the fact it can be configured in an all passenger layout (upto 10 people including pilot), part-passenger / part-cargo (combi) or dedicated cargo all while being able to land and take-off from prepared or unprepared airstrips.
