Air Whitsunday Seaplanes

Air Whitsunday Seaplanes is a Shute Harbour / Whitsunday Airport based operation providing a range of charter, reef tours, scenic flights and passenger transfers to nearby locations including Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and many natural wonders on the Great Barrier Reef.

Of interest, one of the natural wonders regularly visited or over-flown by Air Whitsunday is Heart Reef, a coral cay shaped like a heart that was ironically discovered in 1975 by an Air Whitsunday pilot.

Since commencing operations in 1973, the focus at Air Whitsunday has always been to provide an unsurpassed seaplane service to the region, and having been voted 'Best Tour and Transport Operator' at the Whitsunday Tourism Awards for the past two consecutive years, and awarded finalists in the same category at the Queensland Tourism Awards in 2011, obviously remains a company priority to this very day.

At present, Air Whitsunday operates a modest fleet of three de Havilland DHC-2 Beavers and two Cessna 208FP Caravan's.

Information from the Air Whitsunday website indicates the Cessna Caravan Floatplanes are configured to carry ten passengers (and a pilot), can cruise at 140 knots, and achieve an approximate range of 840nm. Height on land is said to be five meters due to the attached floats.

Meanwhile, it is reported the de Havilland Beavers are configured to carry six passengers (and a pilot), have the ability to cruise at 95 knots, and fly a distance of up to 625nm. Height on land is 4.3 meters.

G'day Marianne,

Sorry for the very slow reply. Australia by Seaplane is the only service by air to Heron Island now. Their page can be found on the R/H side.

I was wondering if the Heath Parasol Miss Sandgate is still in existence? In 1956-7, we lived at Sandgate next to Mr and Mrs Bill Slusar.
